Thèmes de recherche

I apply sedimentology, stratigraphy, and isotope geochemistry to reconstructing ancient environments within the context of secular and progressive tectonic, biospheric, and climatic evolution of the earth. Over the course of my research career, the underlying theme of my research has been to reconstruct paleoenvironmental change during the Neoproterozoic to early Phanerozoic (say, 1000 to 500 ma) and to understand the interconnections between tectonics (i.e. supercontinental break-up and assembly), seawater chemistry and ocean redox, severe climatic fluctuations (including snowball Earth), and the origin and diversification of animals. This research is fundamentally field-based and geared around detailed geological studies of sedimentary rocks that that archive clues as to how the Earth evolved during this time. In collaboration with diverse colleagues, I further interrogate the rock record with analytical tools, including radiogenic and stable isotope geochemistry, geochronology, paleontology, and paleomagnetics.

Beyond this core research theme, my interests are varied and span the geological time scale. In collaboration with colleagues and students, I work on subjects ranging from Archean banded-iron formations (BIFs) to environmental signals preserved in bones and teeth.
